Royalty- and licensing schemes

In addition to BONO collecting and distributing royalties to its own members and the members of our sister societies abroad, BONO is entitled to collect and distribute also for non-members in various areas. These royalty- and licensing schemes include:

Extended Collective Licensing

BONO is approved by the Norwegian Patent Office to license, collect and distribute on behalf of all visual artists in areas where it is impossible or too cumbersome for the user to clear the rights on a work-by-work-basis. These are typically areas of mass use such as the use of visual works in TV, in archives, libraries and museums and the use of visual works in the educational sector.

Artist’s Resale Right

When artworks are resold, for example, through auction houses, galleries, and art dealers, the creator has the right to royalties under certain conditions. This right is called the Artist’s Resale Right (ARR). The royalty is set as a percentage of the sale price and is paid to the individual artist whose work has been resold. BONO is approved by the Ministry of Culture as the collection and distribution organization for the artist’s resale right and performs this for all Norwegian and foreign artists who are entitled to royalties.

Private Copy Compensation

According to the Norwegian Copyright Act, it is permissible to copy copyrighted works for private use. At the same time the law grants creators the right to reasonable compensation for this use of their works. Compensation in Norway is granted annually through the state budget. BONO is the organization that distributes private copying compensation to rightholders of visual works, including foreign rightholders entitled to compensation.
